Supporting small-scale food makers to thrive!
We are Humble Sampler, a social start-up and business with a difference.
We have a vision of an equitable, rich, and diverse food maker scene in Australia, where all food entrepreneurs can thrive.
Our work aims to reduce inequality for food makers and emerging food business entrepreneurs. We provide business support, connection and market access opportunities, as well as work with policy makers to ensure coherent and inclusive regulatory and policy practices that assist small-scale food entrepreneurs to start or grow their businesses.
We have a particular focus on partnering with and celebrating those who are underrepresented in the food industry: women (from all backgrounds), people from refugee and migrant backgrounds, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait peoples.
All of our work seeks to promote equity and address barriers that stop people from getting into the food industry. These barriers exist at many levels of the food-business ecosystem.
At the policy level
We want small-scale food entrepreneurs to be recognised for the social and economic role they play. Food entrepreneurs are often an overlooked but important piece of Australia's food system and we want their voices to be heard.
We look at policies and regulations that have an impact and act as barriers to inclusion and diversity in the food industry, and to economic empowerment, especially for small-scale food entrepreneurs from underrepresented backgrounds impacted by gender, racial, social, and economic inequality.
We work and collaborate with policy makers, regulators, and institutions to raise awareness, to conduct research and build capacity, and to develop community-centred tools to pursue a fair and inclusive food sector where all food makers can thrive no matter their background.
At the individual level
We work to provide food makers with high-quality training, coaching, mentoring, and community so people can access the services and support they need to start and grow a sustainable and successful food business.
We know that not all small-scale food makers have the industry contacts or resources to participate in available training courses and incubator programs. We know that small-scale food businesses need support to grow and become sustainable. And from time to time, a friendly ear makes all the difference for food entrepreneurs working alone.
We help with knowledge sharing, making referrals, connecting food makers to other food makers, to services, to community kitchens, and to market opportunities.
At the community level
We aim to shift perceptions and increase customer demand. We raise awareness and give visibility to underrepresented food makers, showcasing Australia’s amazing variety of makers and products.
Please note, our range of gift hampers featuring delicious products made by small-scale food makers is currently on hiatus. Sign up for our newsletter to get notified when they return.
We’re community-minded food lovers, partnering with talented and capable food makers to start and grow their food businesses.
Humble Sampler started in 2018 with one goal: to assist small-scale food makers to thrive. We achieve this by providing food makers with business support, connection, and market access opportunities, as well as using a systems change approach to enable more equity in the food industry.
We believe in the power of food to foster social cohesion and wellbeing, and in the power of entrepreneurship to achieve economic empowerment. We apply a gender and equity lens to everything that we do. We prioritise listening and learning to the food makers we work with, while also using our background in community development and our lived experiences to inform our work.
To the team @humblesampler - thank you for your interest in our little business, your unconditional support, and for truly understanding what we are trying to accomplish. What you are doing for purpose-driven small businesses is HUGE! Thank you for everything that you do.

Humble Sampler acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of the land where we live and work, the Dja Dja Wurrung, Taungurung and Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung people of the Kulin Nation. We pay respect to Elders past, present and emerging.
Food, fire, agriculture, medicine, food storage and security, and coming together in celebration and exchange were important parts of pre-colonisation culture.
We acknowledge the historical and ongoing impact of colonisation on food sovereignty for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and also recognise the resilience, strength and pride of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
